Why is silk so calming?

Silk has been treasured for thousands of years by empires, by poets and by fashion houses. But beyond its beauty, something subtler is happening. When you wrap yourself in silk, something in your nervous system exhales.
At Baines London, we produce pure silk scarves using real pressed flowers which studies have shown, reduce stress and anxiety. Together, silk and botanicals create something more than a beautiful object. They create a moment of calm.
Touch is the oldest language
The skin is not just a barrier, it is our largest organ, rich with nerve endings directly wired to the parts of the brain that regulate emotion and stress.
When we encounter a soft, smooth texture like silk, the nervous system quietens. Research has shown that contact with soft materials lowers cortisol (the body's primary stress hormone) while encouraging the release of serotonin and oxytocin (the chemicals associated with calm).
The science inside the thread
What makes silk so uniquely soothing is written into its structure. Silk is composed of two proteins (sericin and fibroin) and built from 18 amino acids. Crucially, these amino acids closely mirror those found in human skin. This biological similarity is why silk feels so compatible with the body.
Silk is also a masterful temperature regulator. It keeps you cool when it is warm, and warm when it is cool, preventing the body working too hard to maintain comfort. In sleep studies, cooler body temperatures are directly linked to deeper, more restorative REM sleep. Better sleep, put simply, means a calmer, more resilient mind.
Wearing calm
The fabrics we choose shape our lives more than we realise. Synthetic fibres can feel draining and disconnecting. Natural fibres, like silk, work in harmony with the body.
Baines London products are made with intention. We have chosen silk for what it does as much as for how it looks. Each scarf is 100% pure silk, designed and printed ethically in London, carrying an image of the natural world on its surface.
